10. Take precautions before going to bed
If you have trouble sleeping, make sure you do not eat before sleeping, because it can disrupt your digestive system and exercising will affect your muscles and blood flow which will put a damper on your body’s sleep patterns.

9. Listen to soft or easy music
Music can help calm your mind after a long day of working or schooling. Harmonious sounds can also help you feel at peace with nature and soothe your soul. There are artists out there in many genres to help such as “easy listening”, “light classical”, and “ambience”.

8. Think of boring things
Do you remember sitting through a boring class just about ready to doze off, or channel surfing with the television or radio to not find any good programs on? If you work to put yourself in this mindset in bed, you will probably fall asleep faster.

7. Forget about what happened earlier in the day
Was your day stressful with your boss giving you tons of work to do, or have your parents been yelling at you, or each other, all day, etc.? If you take the time to think of something else than stressful events earlier, you will relax and get to sleep easier. Such events could include reading a book or (not in bed though).

6. Prepare a nice environment
Before you go to bed, it will probably be a good idea to have clean sheets, soft pillow, and a cozy blanket. Also remember to have a nice temperature in the room so you are not too warm or cold.

5. Make sure room is completely dark
I find it particularly hard to fall asleep with any lights on, even if that includes the computer screen, television, or still a night light. Be warned though if you are attempting to help your kids or younger siblings get too sleep, because they may be afraid of the dark.

4. Tune out distractions
If you cannot sleep because of diversions in your room or the room next door, make sure too adjust to the appropriate distraction, such as shutting your door or the nearby door of someone who is snoring, turning off the TV, etc.

3. Ask someone to massage and relax you
Receiving a massage to loosen up tense muscles and take your mind off other troubles is a good idea, just be sure you can find someone willing to give you one, because they may want one in return.

2. Picture yourself doing soothing things in calm places
Perhaps you could imagine yourself on the beach listening to the pleasant waves rolling onto the beach as the warmth of the sun beams down onto your skin. Or you could envision sitting next to a warm campfire with a nice glass of hot cocoa. Wherever you find soothing, just visualize you are there and your brain will help calm yourself to sleep.

1. Take nyquill or sleeping pills as a last resort
If all else fails and you still can’t get to sleep, certain over the counter prescriptions will help knock you out within a few minutes. Caution: take the medicine at your own risk; you would not want to get sick for taking something that will not necessarily help you.
