Top 10 Scientific Facts That May Warp Your Mind
May 19, 2007 8:33 pm ScienceSome odd scientific facts you may not have known could include
10. Unusual Orbit
Uranus is the only planet in the solar system that rotates on a 98 degree axis, or almost completely on its side.
9. Blood is not red
Blood inside our veins is actually the color blue. Blood only appears Red when it makes contact with oxygen.
8. The Sun is 93,000,000 miles away
This number is equivalent to roughly 390 times the distance from the Earth to the Moon. It is also like circling the Earth approximately 2320 times from the equator.
7. Mosquito Repellents don’t work
At least not in the sense that we understand. Instead of repelling, they actually just hide us from Mosquito’s senses.
6. Desert-less
Europe is the only continent on Earth without a desert, it is also the second smallest continent.
5. Erections can occur after death
People that have been hanged or have committed suicide by hanging themselves have been noticed to have complete erections after they die. It is caused by the ropes’ noose’s pressure applied to the brain.
4. There are no Tigers in Africa
While Hollywood gives the impression of all kinds of jungle animals (in this case, tigers), no tigers actually live in Africa. Tigers are mostly found in Asia and Indonesia.
3. The Earth is not a sphere
After making accurate calculations, the Earth is not an exact sphere, it is actually slightly oval shaped, with a bulge near the equator.
2. Big Bang and Evolution are just theories
Our society tends to think of Evolution and Cosmology as scientific facts because they tend to be universally accepted ideas, despite the fact that neither can be proven.
1. Matter is mostly empty space
If you think about it, on the molecular level, atoms are very small and the distance between the nucleus and electrons is very great, compared to their size. Once you get the image of the space between atoms in your head, just multiply that countless times over and you have that much space with matter.

Blood is NOT blue. EVER (maybe if you mix it with food coloring, but…) It’s true that blood is darker when it is deoxygenated, but it is still quite red.
While it’s true that matter is mostly empty space, empty space is kind of a myth. in any vacuum, there are short-lived particles-antiparticle pairs formed and anihalated constantly. Similar in appearance to a fizzing soda.
As for evolution and the Big Bang… yes they are theories, but in the same regard, so are gravity, electricity, light, time as progressive(andn that’s not even a good one), mass…. essentially everything that we think we understand.

Concerning 1 and 2, those were the points I was basically getting at
However for the blood point, I was considering Deoxygenated blood, which has a bluish hue to it. So technically, yes you are correct there, and I apologize for stating it (I guess I shouldn’t have trusted my parents’ facts on blood immediately then
)
